Technique Tips: Handling long lenses
Use these techniques to get the best result with long focal length
lenses.
• Use a tripod whenever possible. Even at
the fastest shutter speeds tripod shots are sharper than hand held
shots.
• Lock the mirror of an SLR camera up, out of the way before releasing
the shutter. If your camera does not have a mirror lock up feature, use
the self timer with a short 2~4 sec delay; most self timers releases the
mirror immediately, so vibration will have ceased by the end of the
delay, when the shutter is tripped.
• Use a cable release and the fastest shutter speed possible.
• When hand holding lenses of moderate of long physical length, use one
hand to support the lens barrel and the other hand to support the camera
body. Keep your elbows against your body to steady your arms.
