Technique tip: handling lenses

It is common sense to handle a lens carefully. But some things that will not damage the glass in a lens can damage the much more delicate anti reflection coating on the exposed front and rear elements.

1. Always place a lens cap over the front of the lens when not actually taking pictures.

2. Add a cap over the rear of the lens whenever it is removed from the camera, even if it is to be kept in a lens case.

3. Use a lens shade on the front of the lens during all picture taking; in addition to eliminating glare, it can act as a shock absorber against bumps.

4. Clean lens surfaces by blowing dust off, or by using a very soft, clean brush; do not rub or polish a surface with cloth or lens tissue.
